Betty Jean Cokley was born in Williamsburg County, South
Carolina to the late Alafair Lilly Witherspoon and Therman Hurse.
She attended Williamsburg County Training School. Betty
married Herbert L. Cokley in the month of November 1962 and
moved to Baltimore, Maryland. From that union came forth four
wonderful children. Betty raised her children to honor God; she
was a Proverbs 31 woman. Betty held several jobs. Later was a
dedicated employee at ACME Pad Corporation, a textile industry
in Baltimore, Maryland. After working there for over twenty
years she retired.
Betty was more than a fighter; she was a Conqueror. She
survived three different types of cancer without the aid of
medications, she had Dr. Jesus. Betty was a faithful member at
Mt. Zion United Church of God in Baltimore, Maryland for over
thirty years. She was the Mother of the church and served under
Rev. Dr. Marian Brooks. Betty loved and cared for her family and
God’s people. She lived to see all of her children join the body of
Christ.
On Monday, May 11, 2020 Betty slipped into the loving arms of
Jesus. She leaves to cherish her precious memories, four loving
children: Melinda Smith, Patricia Cokley-Felder, Lisa Cokley, and
Daniel Cokley; nine grandchildren: Nicole, Tracy, and Alicia Smith,
Marcus Summers, Morgan Shorts, Malon, Menelik, Jayden and
Jillian Cokley; three great-grandchildren: Joseph Brown,
Christopher Andrew, and Christina Howard. Living siblings –
brothers: Willie O’Neal and Hercules; sisters: Cynthia Davis
(Rydell Davis), and Sylvia Singletary (Randy Singletary). Siblings
who preceded her in death are, Lillie, James, and Daniel Tucker.
Her Uncle James Sabb (Elsia) of Union, New Jersey and Aunt Lillie-
Bell Sabb of Orangeburg South Carolina. Rosetta Cokley, her
loving sister-in-law and closet friend who preceded her in death;
a longtime friend is Ms. Margaret Foreman, and best friend Ms.
Yolanda Rollins. She also leaves to mourn a host of cousins,
nieces, nephews, church family, and friends.
